Waste Compliance Specialists provide technical waste compliance expertise for waste consignments requiring disposal at authorised landfills or treatment service providers such as incineration or metals treatment facilities.

Primarily this role focuses on leading the Waste Consignment Information (WCI) technical assessments; ensuring customer WCI submissions meet WAC compliance for disposals. It also includes supporting the wider Waste Inventory & Compliance (WI&C) function in managing radiological and non-radiological capacity management, technical assessment of customer Waste Characterisation (WCH) forms, Waste Variation (WCV) forms, supporting BAT/BPM/BPEO studies and the LLWR Characterisation Standard.

Job Responsibilities
  • Undertaking technical assessments of customers WCI forms for disposal against the latest Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC) for disposal at the LLWR site, whilst maintaining accurate records of decision making.
  • Undertaking robust and comprehensive technical assessments of customers WCH and WCV submissions, whilst maintaining accurate records of decision making.
  • Undertaking technical reviews and challenge relating to customer BAT studies in support of WCH submissions and/or other pertinent information documented in the WCH form.
  • Providing sound technical advice to customers and/or the wider team with respect to waste characterisation methods and potential treatment and disposability options.
  • Provision of support and guidance to the wider Waste Inventory and Compliance (WI&C) team for more complex waste types.
  • Maintaining frequent levels of communication with customers in respect to their form submissions, including suggested areas of improvement
  • Ongoing development of WI&C processes and procedures, including support of periodic process owner reviews.
  • Provision of sound advice to customers with respect to waste consignment and waste characterisation methods and potential treatment and disposability of wastes.
  • Supporting the development and ongoing management of the LLWR Characterisation Standard.


Experience Required

  • University degree in scientific discipline or relevant demonstrable experience.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills and experience of working with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail, due to the range of data and information to be generated and managed.
  • Experienced user of MS Office suite, Word, Excel, Outlook.
