Waste Barrells
Collaborative project safely disposing of over 1,000 drums of radioactive waste completes

A major collaboration between Nuclear Waste Services (NWS), Nuclear Restoration Services (NRS) and Nuclear Transport Solutions (NTS) to safely and efficiently manage, and permanently dispose of more than 1,000 drums of waste, has completed earlier than expected.

The innovative project was an accumulation of eight years’ work and has seen eleven consignments, of low level radioactive waste, transported by rail from the NRS site at Winfrith, Dorset, to the Low Level Waste Repository in Cumbria for final disposal.

Hitachi
Great British Nuclear to buy two Hitachi sites for new nuclear development

In a historic day for the UK’s energy security, Great British Nuclear (GBN) is buying land for new nuclear development from Hitachi at both Wylfa in Ynys Môn/Anglesey and Oldbury-on-Severn in Gloucestershire. GBN also announced today that the six companies in Great British Nuclear’s (GBN) Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Technology Selection Process can now access tender documentation, allowing them to bid for potentially multi-billion-pound technology development contracts.

Energy independence
British nuclear revival to move towards energy independence

Great British Nuclear to boost UK energy security, reduce dependence on volatile fossil fuel imports and deliver government priority to grow the economy.

A massive revival of nuclear power is underway today, placing the UK at the forefront of a global race to develop cutting-edge technologies to rapidly deliver cleaner, cheaper, more secure energy.

Hinkley Point C social mobility
New research shows the positive impact of Hinkley Point C on social mobility and the economy

Hinkley Point C has transformed the fortunes of its local area, according to new research. What was once seen as being too remote, with not enough jobs, and an ageing population, has instead become a success story.

In 2017 the Guardian reported that West Somerset was bottom in a UK league table for social mobility – but what a difference a nuclear new build project like Hinkley Point C has made to the local economy since then.

Sellafield electricity project powers ahead
Sellafield electricity project powers ahead

A critical project to upgrade Sellafield’s electrical power network has hit an important milestone.

The Electrical Distribution Network Upgrade Project, known as EDNUP,  is working to refurbish the Sellafield site’s electricity system.

Teams working on the project installed 33 concrete base slabs last year, achieving a key target.

Laying slabs on a site as complex and congested as Sellafield is no easy job.

Somerset saltmarsh
Hinkley Point C sets out plan to create Somerset saltmarsh

Hinkley Point C, the new nuclear power station in Somerset, is asking for views on its plans to create more than 800 acres of saltmarsh on the River Parrett.

The proposed saltmarsh at Pawlett Hams near Bridgwater would create new habitat for fish and animals, improve local water quality and help prevent flooding. It’s one of a number of proposed measures to help wildlife and the environment around the Severn estuary. These include planting of seagrass and kelp, developing native oyster beds and removing weirs on three rivers to help migrating fish to reach their breeding grounds.

Desalination plant planned for Sizewell C construction
Desalination plant planned for Sizewell C construction

A temporary water desalination plant, powered with electricity from Sizewell B, is planned to meet the water requirements for the construction of the Sizewell C nuclear power plant in Suffolk, UK. A new water main is expected to provide a permanent supply in the early 2030s.

Homeowners can have confidence in their choice of a metal roofing contractor knowing they have met certain requirements in their services.
