Safety Case Engineers are responsible for the development and production of the environmental safety case, and the production of environmental safety reports
Job Responsibilities
- Production of generic and site specific environmental safety reports
- Acting in the capacity of Intelligent Client for procurement of environmental safety case services
- Specification of work, assessment of tenders and management of contracts for safety case services
- Review and challenge of work undertaken by suppliers to ensure that work is of appropriate quality, is checked and verified and meets the needs of the safety case
- Ensuring work is carried out in line with NWS Technical Governance procedures
- Developing strategies and approaches for demonstrating compliance with appropriate regulations
- Developing claims, arguments and evidence in support of the environmental safety case
- Understanding and communicating the output of total system models of the disposal system
- Providing high quality and timely advice on environmental safety case aspects
- Providing input to site specific evaluations of environmental safety
- Checking and approving post-closure disposability assessments produced in support of the Letter of Compliance Process
- Working with internal stakeholders, including research managers, to ensure that work meets safety case needs
- Working with internal stakeholders across the business to communicate the outputs and needs of the safety case
- Acting as a senior representative at national and international fora and events (including involvement with EC projects and international organisations such as the IAEA and NEA
- Engaging with learned societies and the general public, as appropriate
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Good interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex safety arguments to a wide range of stakeholders (specialist and non-specialist)
- Good first degree in science or engineering subject
- Good understanding of regulatory requirements for the environmental safety cases
- Knowledge of the form, hazard and characteristics of higher activity radioactive wastes and waste packaging processes
- Experienced safety case report author
